Heyo, welcome to Nerdy Foodie! This is a space for us to discuss all things related to food, nutrition science, and public health in a (hopefully) fun and accessible way.
why this blog?
An abundance of food content floats around on the internet. It ranges from TikTok moms making videos of their elaborate dinners, to gym rats pounding down ridiculous amounts of protein, to numerous media articles on the “Top 53 Restaurants in [insert location name here].” On the health professional side, it’s easy to find dietitians sharing recipes on healthy eating, doctors talking about the newest nutrition therapies, and public health officials telling us to eat more fiber in monotone (and our eyes glaze over).
the niche
Nutrition advice from media personalities typically come from the individuals’ anecdotal experience, without being rigorously interrogated by the science of nutrition. It is not that they are always wrong, but their advice may not be supported by the current (or even basic) health research. On the other hand, food research and public health recommendations tend to be written for a niche audience; that is, for other people who are familiar with the vocabulary, the studies, etc. And for a non-science geek, those ideas can be, well... a snooze fest.
thus, the birth of nerdy foodie
As a graduate student training in both public health and nutrition, I envision Nerdy Foodie to be a platform for making nutrition science fun, practical, and relatable – bringing academic content into everyday life. It will be a space to muse about nutrition science, to capture those "aha!" moments inside and outside the classroom, and to practice communicating scientific topics in an engaging way.
your value gain
